Animal Report

For the last week we have been learning and writing about an animal. My animal I chose was a Flying Snake. First we had to gather all the information and put it on a document in our own words and then we wrote the report.

Here is my report:

Did you know their are 5 types of Flying snakes? There are the Paradise Tree snake, Moluccan snake, Indian snake, Golden Tree snake and the Twin Barred Tree snake. The Flying snake’s scientific name is Chrysopelea and also the snake is a reptile. They can grow up to 1.2 meters but some of them can only grow around 61 centimetres but the smaller the better because the smallest are the best gliders. The Flying snake belongs to the family Colubridae because they are mildly venomous to their prey but are perfectly fine to humans.

The Flying snake is found in lots of places but mostly in the jungles of south and southeast Asia. They live in jungles so they can climb and glide off trees to be protected from predators. All the different types of Flying snakes live in different places. Here is where some of them live, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, parts of the Philippines, Singapore and southern Thailand.

The Flying snake has a long thin slender body. Most have slimy yellow scales on their back which are framed with black edges. Some have a stripe of red going down their back or have a bunch of red on the top of their head. They can camouflage into the ground so they can get away from predators easily.

The Flying snake is a carnivore this means they only eat meat. They have small fangs that poison the animal. Their poison is venomous to humans. They only eat rodents, lizards, frogs, birds and bats. They also don’t have the right kind of teeth to chew animals so it eats them whole.

The female Flying snake lays 6 - 12 eggs in May or June but the eggs hatch in June. The hatchings are 15 - 20cm long and their colours are the same as an adult but just brighter.

Have you ever wondered if Flying snakes really fly? They don’t really fly, they glide from tree to tree. They flatten their body up to two times their width from their head to the bottom of their tail. Once they have flattened the body it goes into an U shape to make it like a parachute so they can glide down to safety. Some Flying snakes can glide up to 100 meters without touching the ground but sometimes that doesn’t work out and they crash land, on land.

Flying snakes have a lot of predators but their main predator is King Cobra. To escape from him they use acrobatics or gliding. Also their colours sometimes scare predators away. Some snakes roll over or play dead when confronted by their predators.

I don’t think many people have heard of the animal Flying snake that’s why I wanted to do it for an animal report. I thought before I started this report it was just a boring little snake that had a cool name but then I learnt that it glides and it doesn't like the King Cobra and lots more. I hope one day I could learn more about Flying Snakes so I could teach other people more about it.

Spray Painting

Last term Room 18 went to the Spectrum art museum and learnt about spray painting. We all made our own by
making a stencil with masking tape. Then we spray painted over the masking tape. The next day we peeled off the masking tape.

Here's the one I did:

Maths Strategies

In Room 18 this week we have been working out multiplication problems using 2 different strategies. We had to choose out of 2 questions 28 x 6 or 36 x 18 (which I did)

This is the way I sorted this problem out

  Strategy 1            36 x 18 = ?          Strategy 2.
+(36 x 2)= 72                                             10 x 36 = 360
36 x 20= 720                                            8 x 36 = 288
720-72= 648                                             288 + 368= 648
                              36 x 18 = 648

Multiplication Strategy

In Room 18 we have been learning how to do some multiplication questions using two different strategies, there is the strategy place value and rounding and compensating. Here is a place value strategy that I did with my maths partner.

"The Legend classes (when combined with their buddy classes) had 48 children in each of the four houses how many children altogether?

(I know that there is eight classes altogether including buddy classes)

48 x 8= ?
40 x 8 = 320
8 x 8 = 64
320 + 64 = 384

Camp Letter

Here is a letter I wrote to my parent helper on camp. In the letter there is a recount about the sensory trail which was my favourite part about camp.
I hope you like it!

23 May 2016

Dear Pip

Thank you for coming to Arthur's Pass camp. Without you this camp would not have been possible. I really appreciate how you helped make dinner and helped out with our team challenges. Thank you for being patient with me on the sensory trail and helping Beech with the scavenger hunt. I really appreciate everything you did on camp.
Here is a recount I wrote about my favourite moment from camp.

“DUCK, you are going to hit a tree,” shouted Miss Scott. I started to walk, slow and steady as Dave the guide had told me at the lodge. I held onto the rough rope and started to walk. I came to the first obstacle, well maybe not for some people but definitely me. There was a root sticking out of the ground, oh wait there were lots of roots but there was one huge root sticking out of the ground, I forgot to step and at that very moment I got scared to death. An adult caught me but it had startled me so much. I kept on going hoping there was no more obstacles.

After I walked for a little longer “Ow” I cried I took my hands off the rope to see what it was, I felt it, it felt rough like bark until I thought about it. We are in a forest in Arthur's Pass, of course it was a tree. I kept walking slowly and steady until a parent said “STOP Sally stop, just wait for a second.” I knew straight away that there was a bad obstacle up ahead because Juliet went before me and I had to stop and wait for her. “Wow” I knew then why I had to wait this was really tough, it’s a break in the rope and it was really hard to find the rope again. I tried to do it for about 2 to 5 minutes and I too started to rage but I’m pretty sure the adult that was there was getting annoyed at me for raging so she directed my hand to the rope.

I kept walking until I fell into a hole, I fell into a deep hole. It was very tough to get out of there without letting go of the rope. I slipped over while I was trying to hike up the hole. Of course I kept one hand on the rope but the other one fell off and for the rest of the day my hand was very muddy. I kept walking following the rope.

“What is this” I thought as I felt something wet and freezing cold when I was further down the track. I tried to climb over it, no that didn't work, around it, nope still didn't work, I tried over again and this time it worked. As my bottom was moving across the wet and cold thing slowly I thought what could this be. I remember every obstacle that Dave told us about, the break in the rope, climbing over a rock, a big hole, hmmm which one could it be. I know, it is a rock. Right now my bottom is sliding across a wet and freezing cold rock. Finally I finished sliding over that rock now I have to keep going to the end and who knows how long that will take. I kept walking until I heard a “RAAA” at first I was a little bit scared but when I heard “Jaden you were too early” I wasn't scared any more I was just glad that I finished the sensory trail.
The sensory trail was awesome even though all the obstacles were hard but it was still one of the most funniest things I have done. One day when you go to Arthur's Pass I would encourage you to give the sensory trail a go.

Pip, I appreciate you helping me with the sensory trail and leading my hand to the rope. Without you I would still be standing there trying to find the rope. Once again, thank you for helping out at Arthur's Pass camp. What was your favourite moment from camp?

Yours sincerely,
Sally

Camp Poem

We just came back from camp at Arthur's Pass and what a time we had. We went there on a train it took 2 and a half hours to get there and when we got there we settled into our cabins and did lots of cool things like...
Hut building, 2 BIG walks, charades, blindfolded pictionary, sensory trail and lots more.

This is a poem about the sensory trail.

I heard
The water rushing as I leaped over a stream with my big heavy shoes.

I heard
Miss Scott shout "DUCK" as I was nearly about to hit my head on a branch.

I saw
Nothing as I followed the rough rope with my sturdy hand.

I felt
Scared as I didn't know how long the to the end.

I felt
Something cold and wet as I tried to get over it.

I wondered
How far to the end as I was getting tired of tripping over.

I wondered

How close the other person was to me.

Hatchet Response

This term we have been reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Hatchet is about a boy named Brian. Brian went to visit his dad but unexpectedly the pilot had a heart attack. The plane crashed in the Canadian woods so he had to learn how to survive. This is my favourite Hatchet response because it is where Brian had to try and make a fire. He used dry grass and twenty dollars to try and make his fire and eventually he did.

NEW ZEALAND ARTIST
Mark Craven

INTRODUCTION:
Mark Craven is a 22 year old New Zealand artist.
He is in his last year of Auckland Universe studying for a degree in Architecture.
“ Painting is my second love next to architecture and any spare time I have, I paint”.
His other interests include playing the trumpet, surfing, wakeboarding, and basketball.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:
He has been painting since the age of 13, and has already been employed for several commissioned works.

INSPIRATION:
His inspiration for doing his art was the environment he lived in - by the North Shore. He says the beaches and vivid colours of the coastal landscape inspire him to paint.

My inspiration for choosing Mark Craven’s artwork is because I love seeing the beach and especially like playing in the water. I love seeing the clear blue water and splashing the water into my brother’s face!

CONCLUSION:
I chose Mark Craven and his artwork because it really stood out to me because of all the colour but mostly the Pohutukawa tree.

I went to the store and brought flowers that look like the ones that are on his work. The flower will have a 3D effect. I will use watercolour to do the waves and the beach.

Maths

For maths we have been learning Geometry, Symmetry, Reflect (Flipping), Translation (Sliding) and Rotation (Turning). My partner and I made this pattern with some koru pictures. We coloured them in and put them in a mirror line made by folding the paper.

To Smoke Or Not To Smoke

Did you know every smoke you have will make your life 11 minutes shorter?

Over 5,000 New Zealanders die from smoking each year.

I think it is scary because some teens only smoke because they think they will get skinnier and others smoke because their friends have given them one so they start and then they can not stop.

Smoking can get really serious. I have got one thing to say, stop before you start. Instead of getting skinnier you only get lung cancer which you can die from.

Almost 15 billion cigarettes are smoked world wide every day and we all want this to go down so less cigarettes are smoked each day. Pretty much 90% of adult smokers started when they were kids.

Why you do not want to smoke? One reason is because it is poisonous.  Each cigarette has a lot of poisonous chemicals which taste horrible. Your body tries to get rid of the poison by making you feel sick.
I know you are thinking if it tastes really bad why don’t they stop?

It’s very hard to stop smoking!
One of the chemicals in cigarettes is called nicotine. Nicotine is a very addictive drug which makes it hard to stop smoking. When you are smoking the levels of nicotine in your body starts to drop which makes you want another one.

Smoking also kills!
Smoking damages your lungs which makes it harder for you to run and play sports with your friends. It also makes you more likely to catch coughs and colds or suffer with asthma.
Worst of all, smoking increases your chances of getting cancer and other horrible diseases which can kill you.

Before I finish this speech I just want to say,“Stop before you start and if you have started stop now and call someone to help you through it.

Thank you

Holiday Activities

2 July 2015

Dear Mum and Dad,

I am so happy about the holidays It would be great if we did one of these AWESOME activities .

It would be so much easier to go to the maze because you don’t have to pay as much money as normal because one day Connor got player of the day (well no, that isn't true, we were walking back to the car from the soccer game and a player of the day voucher fell out of someone’s bag so we picked it up) but it is still here today for us to use.

If we can’t I would love if we could do arts and crafts. It would be fun and for my birthday last year I got an art spinny thingy where you squirty paint when the base is spinning. Then you get the paint and tip it on the base while it’s spinning and it looks really cool after you are done.

I just really hope we could both but most probably not but if I could choose I would choose the maze. Hey, we still have the player of the day to use.
With love,
Sally
